If you weren't paying close attention to Audi around the turn of the millennium, the original A2 probably passed you by entirely. That's not a knock on you. It passed most of Australia by too. Google and Reddit suggest that just four A2 examples were ever officially delivered to lucky Australian buyers, making it rarer than a Ferrari F40 locally. And yet the A2 has quietly become one of those 'IYKYK' cars. A little aluminium-bodied five-seater that took the fight to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, ran tiny petrol and TDI engines, and treated fuel efficiency as the whole point rather than an afterthought.

The ones that survived did so because they were built properly. Poke around the classifieds and you'll find UK and Australian examples with moon-miles on the odometer, still going. There's one for sale in Perth right now with 107,000km showing and a $10,000 ask, which tells you everything about how these cars were engineered and nothing about how many people were ever willing to buy one new.

So the A2 was a cult classic that never sold. That's the DNA Audi is reaching back for with the new A2 e-tron, and it's a genuinely exciting little offering

Efficiency as the headline, not the footnote

Here's where the new car earns its name. Audi calls the A2 e-tron the most efficient model in the company's history, and the figures back it up: energy consumption of just 12.8kWh/100km and a WLTP range of up to 646km. For a compact EV, that combination is the whole ballgame. Plenty of small electric cars will quote you a big range number by strapping in a big battery. Doing it on 12.8kWh/100km means the car is actually sipping, not just carrying more fuel.

A lot of that comes down to the shape. The A2 e-tron posts a drag coefficient of 0.24, which Audi says is the best in its compact segment. The original A2 was famously slippery for its era, all smooth surfaces and that distinctive teardrop profile, so it's fitting that the reborn car leans on aerodynamics rather than brute battery capacity to get where it's going.

The range is offered across four power levels and three battery sizes, so "the A2 e-tron" is really a family rather than a single car. What that lineup costs, and which battery gets you the 646km figure, are the questions I want answered, and those details aren't fully locked down yet.

Rear-wheel drive - The part that made me sit up

This detail separates the A2 e-tron from almost everything it competes with. The entire range is rear-wheel drive. In this segment, that's close to unheard of. Small EVs are overwhelmingly front-driven for packaging and cost reasons, so a rear-drive layout across the board suggests Audi wants this thing to actually be enjoyable to punt down a road, not just efficient in a spreadsheet. Whether the driving experience lives up to that promise is something I'll reserve judgement on until there's a car to drive, but the intent is clear, and it's welcome.

It also offers bidirectional charging as an option, covering both Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home. V2L is genuinely handy at a campsite or a kids sport. V2H is the more interesting one long term, letting the car feed power back into your house, though how usable that is in Australia depends heavily on your home setup and your energy retailer playing along. A big-car interior on a small-car footprint

The packaging trick that defined the first A2 carries over. Audi is promising high interior versatility and a genuinely spacious cabin despite the compact exterior, topped by a 1.6-square-metre panoramic glass roof. On a car this size, a roof that big changes how the whole cabin feels.

The tech suite is modern Audi through and through. It comes standard with an MMI panoramic display pairing an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit with a 12.8-inch touchscreen in a curved arrangement, plus an Audi assistant with AI, an e-tron route planner, and the usual bundle of digital features - with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto all that people really care about. Audi's also making a point of the Fidlock fastening system arriving as standard, which it's badging as a premium-segment first. I'll believe the "premiere" framing when I've used it, but the broader message is that the A2 e-tron isn't being treated as a stripped-out entry model.

Safety is where the small car punches up a class. Standard equipment includes emergency brake assist, evasive assist, attention assist, adaptive cruise control, Parking System Plus and a rear-view camera. That's a full-size-class list on a city-car footprint, and it matters, because the buyers most likely to be tempted by a compact Audi are exactly the ones who'll appreciate not having to option safety back in.

Built at home, which is not a small thing right now

Audi is producing the A2 e-tron at its home plant in Ingolstadt, reusing existing robots and production equipment rather than building a line from scratch. That's a sensible efficiency story in its own right, and in the current climate it's also a bit of a statement about where Audi wants its volume EVs coming from.

The Australian catch

Now the part that matters most to anyone reading this at home. Orders open in Germany on September 10, 2026, with a market launch there in December and prices starting at 38,200 euros. Convert that, and you're looking at roughly AUD$62,000 before import taxes and on-road costs, which means the landed Australian figure, if it lands at all, will be meaningfully higher. That's not a $62,000 car by the time it's registered in your driveway.

And here's the timing problem. The one lever that's been making EVs genuinely attractive to Australian buyers, the novated lease incentive, is being progressively wound up through the first half of 2027. So a car that opens for European orders in September 2026 and launches there in December is arriving in a market where the tax advantage that would have sold it is fading right as it would turn up. For a compact EV whose entire pitch is efficient, sensible, cost-effective motoring, losing the lease sweetener isn't a small detail. It's the difference between an easy yes and a long think.

So, should we care?

The original A2 was a brilliant car that Australia strangely ignored, and there's a real risk that Shirley Bassey gets another run. But the reborn A2 e-tron is a more compelling proposition than the badge alone suggests: class-leading aerodynamics, a genuinely frugal 12.8kWh/100km, range north of 600km, rear-wheel drive, and a safety and tech list borrowed from cars much further up the food chain.

The engineering isn't the question. The question, as ever with a compact Audi in this country, is whether it arrives at a price that makes sense once you take away the tax cleverness. The deft A1 hatch has done very well in Australia - my daughter has one, and it’s an absolute gem. However, during a recent lap through an Audi dealership, I did see the drive-away price on a current model A1 started with a 6.

Get that right, and the A2 e-tron could finally be the small Audi Australians actually buy. Get it wrong and it'll be another quietly excellent car we admire from a distance and never see on the road.
